Hai Gaon

(939-1038)
Babylonian gaon, son of Sherira Gaon. Initially he assisted his father in administering and teaching in the academy at Pumbedita. He was appointed head of the bet din in 986 and gaon in 998. Under his leadership the Pumbedita academy became a centre of Jewish learning; he was the last gaon of Pumbedita. He issued thousands of responsa covering numerous areas of halakhic literature. In addition, he wrote a commentary on several tractates of the Talmud, poetry, and a treatise on commercial transactions.
